Magnetic Fields, Accretion, and the Central Engine of Gamma–Ray Bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
I briefly review magnetic effects in accretion physics, and then go on to discuss a possible central engine for gamma–ray bursts. A rotating black hole immersed in a non–axisymmetric magnetic field experiences a torque trying to align spin and field. I suggest that gamma–ray burst hosts may provide conditions where this effect allows rapid extraction of a significant fraction of the hole’s rotational energy. I argue that much of the electromagnetic emission is in two narrow beams parallel and antiparallel to the asymptotic field direction. This picture suggests that only a mass ∼ 10M⊙ is expelled in a relativistic outflow, as required by the fireball picture.

Magnetically Torqued Neutrino-Dominated Accretion Flows for Gamma-ray Bursts
Recent observations and theoretical work on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) favor the central engine model of a Kerr black hole (BH) surrounded by a magnetized neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF). The magnetic coupling between the BH and disk through a large-scale closed magnetic field exerts a torque on the disk, and transports the rotational energy from the BH to the disk. We investigate the pro...
متن کاملStellar Explosions by Magnetic Towers
We propose a magnetic mechanism for the collimated explosion of massive stars relevant for long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), X-ray Flashes (XRFs) and asymmetric core collapse supernovae. In particular, we apply Lynden-Bell’s magnetic tower scenario to the interior of a massive rotating star after the core has collapsed to form a collapsar with a black hole accretion disk or a millisecond m...
متن کامل0 A Central Engine for Cosmic Gamma - Ray Burst Sources
One of a family previously proposed " central engines " for cosmic gamma-ray burst sources (Klu´zniak & Ruderman 1998) is considered in some detail. A steadily accreting 10 6 Gauss magnetic white dwarf should ultimately collapse to a strongly differentially rotating, millisecond-rotation-period neutron star for a wide range of steady accretion rates and initial masses if the accreting white dwa...
متن کاملDead Zone Formation and Nonsteady Hyperaccretion in Collapsar Disks : a Possible Origin of Short-term Variability in the Prompt Emission of Gamma-ray Bursts
The central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is believed to be a hot and dense disk with hyperaccretion onto a few solar mass black hole. We investigate where magnetorotational instability (MRI) actively operates in the hyperaccretion disk, which can cause angular momentum transport in disks. The inner region of the hyperaccretion disk can become neutrino opaque, and the energy and momentum tr...
متن کاملMHD Jets, Flares, and Gamma Ray Bursts
Recent numerical simulations of MHD jets from accretion disks are briefly reviewed with emphasis on the scaling law for jet speed and the role of magnetic reconnection in relation to time variability in accretion disks, jets, and flares. On the basis of these studies, possible interpretation is given on why statistical properties of peak intensity, peak interval, and peak duration of gamma ray ...
